Under the Sign of the Blue Note

Some time around 1955 or so you could have had quite the birthday party on October 13 by inviting three guys also born on that date to celebrate with you: Art Tatum (1909) on piano, Ray Brown (1926) on bass, and Lee Konitz (1927) on alto sax. It’s almost enough to give a semblance of respectability to astrology!

To get the party started, here’s Art Tatum, with Benny Carter on alto sax and Louis Bellson on drums, doing right by Idaho.

Speaking of 1955 and Idaho, in that season the greatest ballplayer from that state, Harmon Killebrew, hit 4 home runs in 38 games for the Washington Senators as a 19-year-old bonus baby.
